Apologia Session 6 | Practical Ways to Live a Christian Worldview Big Ideas: · To provoke you, as a follower of Christ to adopt and live out a Christian worldview. · Call out some potential detractors from living out your faith. 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? Hebrews 5:12-14 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Tradition “Men do not reject the Bible because it contradicts itself, but because it contradicts them.” — E. Paul Hovey “Men are apt to prefer a prosperous error to an afflicted truth.”— Jeremy Taylor Tradition: 1. The handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs, information, etc., from generation to generation, especially by word of mouth or by practice. 2 Thessalonians 2:15 Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle. Deuteronomy 6:1, 2 “Now this is the commandment, and these are the statutes and judgments which the LORD your God has commanded to teach you, that you may observe them in the land which you are crossing over to possess, “that you may fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. Psalm 78:1-4 Give ear, O my people, to my law; Incline your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old, which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done. Tradition: 2. A long-established or inherited way of thinking or acting: a continuing pattern of culture beliefs or practices. Mark 7:7-9 and in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ “For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men--the washing of pitchers and cups, and many other such things you do.” He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. Isaiah 29:13 (NIV) The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught. Ephesians 4:3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Here are some questions to help in determining if a tradition is healthy. 1. Does it initiate with the Bible or cultural norms? 2. Does the tradition uphold or pass on God’s Word? 3. Has the tradition taken on a life of its own outside of its intended meaning? 4. Has the tradition become more important than the reason for which it was started? (Or an idol?)
