Apologia Session 5 | Hidden Worldviews Pastor Nate Sweeney Big Idea: · There is a worldly system that is contrary to biblical truth that wars against your soul. · Self-reflection to isolate areas where hidden worldviews, alien to Christianity, have crept into our thoughts and lifestyles. · To provoke you, as a follower of Christ to adopt and live out a Christian worldview. 1 Peter 2:8-12 They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed. 9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. 11 Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, 12 having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation. You cannot please God and culture. You offend one or the other. Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. I John 2:15-17 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. 1 John 4:2-3 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world. Romans 8:5-8 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. Traditional Worldviews Worldview-A worldview is a collection of attitudes, values, stories and expectations about the world around us, which inform our every thought and action. (Sire, J. W. (2004) Naming the Elephant: Worldview as a Concept. Intervarsity Press) A pattern of ideas, beliefs, convictions, and habits that help us make sense of God, the world, and our relationship to God and the world. Myers, Jeff; Noebel, David A.. Understanding the Times: A Survey of Competing Worldviews (pp. 5-6). David C Cook. Kindle Edition. Context of Worldviews Expressed: Theology Philosophy Ethics Biology Psychology Sociology Law Politics Economics History Hidden Worldviews 8 Belief Systems some identify as worldviews: · Individualism- · Consumerism- · Nationalism- · Moral Relativism- · Naturalism- · The New Age- · Post Modern Tribalism- · Salvation by therapy (Moral Therapeutic Deism) Colossians 2:8-10 8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. 2 Timothy 4:1-5 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
