Doctrine Session 9 | Empowered by the Holy Spirit Big Ideas: ● Start with an unbiased mindset. ● The person of the Holy Spirit ● The manifestations of the Holy Spirit (gifts given) Cessationism-The apostolic “sign” and “revelatory” gifts ceased with the last apostle's death. Continuationism-All the gifts of the spirit are in operation in the body of Christ today and were never meant to cease at any point in our history. D. A Carson, a respected New Testament scholar, concluded, “There is enough evidence that some form of ‘charismatic’ gifts continued sporadically across the centuries of church history and that it is futile to insist on doctrinaire grounds that every report is spurious or the fruit of demonic activity or psychological aberration.” We believe all the fruit and gifts of the Holy Spirit explained in the New Testament and witnessed in the early Church are available and in operation in the Body of Christ today. Jesus declared in Acts 1:8 that we need to be empowered to be His witnesses to the world. This empowerment may be accompanied by many outward manifestations and signs that Jesus said would follow those who believe. (See 1 Corinthians 12, Romans 12, 1 Peter 4:7-11 and Ephesians 4.) We believe that all the biblical gifts of the Spirit continue to be distributed by the Spirit today; that these gifts are divine provisions central to spiritual growth and effective ministry; and that these gifts are to be eagerly desired, faithfully developed, and lovingly exercised according to biblical guidelines (John 14:12; Acts 2:14-21; 4:29-30; Romans 12:3-8; 1 Corinthians 12:7-11; 12:28-31; 14:1-33; Galatians 3:1-5). The Person of the Holy Spirit The Person of the Holy Spirit is the essence of this study and is focused on getting to know Him and coming in line with His direction. The Promise John 14:15-17 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever-- the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. Parakletos (par-ak’-lay-tos) is a Greek word that means “an intercessor, consoler, advocate, comforter, strengthener, helper and standby.” John 14:25-26 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 15:26-27 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning. John 16:7-15 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. Acts 1:4-5 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” Acts 2:14-16 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. 15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: Acts 2:37-39 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.” The manifestations of the Holy Spirit (gifts given) Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” The word power in Acts 1:8 is Dunamis and is defined as power, might, strength: ability, mighty, miracles, miraculous powers. Fruit of the Holy Spirit Outpouring Love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, preaching, teaching, prophesy, tongues, repentance, salvation, unity, godly fear, miracles, healings, peace that surpasses intellect, godly wisdom, visions, dreams, divine protection, etc. 1 Peter 4:10-11 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 11 If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen. The Greek word for spiritual gift is charisma, from which our word charismatic comes. The word Charisma means gift of grace, free gift, favor, spiritual gift, bestowed freely, empowerment, and abilities the Holy Spirit gives to the church. 1 Corinthians 12:1 Now, concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant (BBE). But about the things of the spirit, my brothers, it is not right for you to be without teaching (EFB). It is important, brethren, that you should have clear knowledge on the subject of spiritual gifts (WNT). 1 Corinthians 14:1 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts. Galatians 5:22, 23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. 1 Corinthians 2:9-11 “But as it is written: Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Ephesians 5:18 Do not be drunk with wine, which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit. Filled=Pleroo-make or become full (Sailing-curve outwardly from its supports as the wind blows into it.) 1 John 2:20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things The word anointing in 1 John 2: 20 and others is Chrisma, and means anointing, to anoint, an unction, There were unique elements in Jesus’ ministry that affirmed His messianic identity. There were also unique elements in the 12 apostles' ministry that affirmed their apostolic identity that we don’t have. However, the same spirit that empowered Jesus without measure empowers us by measure. (we have all of the person of the Holy Spirit, but the empowerment is dispersed throughout Christ's body) Take Aways: ● What does your fellowship of the person of the Holy Spirit look like? ● What are some practical ways you can pursue this fellowship with Him? ● On your discipleship journey, what areas of scripture do you need to study to gain a deeper understanding of the Holy Spirit’s role in your life?
