Did God Really Say? | Session 3 | Biblical Hermeneutics Part 2 Big Ideas: ● Hermeneutical Perspective vs. The Personal Perspective Matthew 22:31-33 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” 33 And when the multitudes heard this, they were astonished at His teaching. 1. The Bible is not a book, but a library of books put in a single volume. 2. The Bible is written for us but not about us. 3. Don’t simply read a Bible verse in isolation but study the context. 6 Dispensations in the Bible 1. God Creates and Dwells with People Genesis 1-2 2. Humans Rebel and Fallout Happens Genesis 3-11 3. Redemption Promised and Foreshadowed Genesis 12-Malachi ● God Chooses Israel to bless the nations. Gen. 12- Deuteronomy ● Israel's royal failure (Joshua, Judges, 1 & 2nd Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings) ● Israel’s exile and the prophetic hope. (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea-Malachi) ● 400-year period between old and New Testament where a lot happened but nothing considered inspired scripture, so we have no biblical record. 4. Redemption Provided in Jesus (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) 5. Mission to all Nations (Acts -Revelation) 6. Redemption Completed, God Dwells with People Again (Revelation 22) A. Scripture does not contradict scripture. B. Every text must be understood in its context—historical, cultural, and social. What was the author’s intent in each book, passage, and sentence, and what did it mean to the original hearers? Acts 20:28-31 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. 31 Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears. C. When I hear people willing to dismiss these topics as irrelevant or out of date, my question is: “What other of the Lord’s commands are you willing to sit in judgment upon?” 4. The Bible is all about Jesus. John 5:39-40 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. 40 But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. Revelation 19:10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” Take Away: 1. Do I recognize the importance to my spiritual life to study the bible? 2. If I want to really grasp a concept as a disciple of Christ, I need to learn with the intention to apply it to my own life and teach it to others.
